Special Session 2

Continuous Optimization and Related Areas

Organizers:

  • Alfredo Noel Iusem (Escola de Matemática Aplicada (EMAp)-Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil),
  • Francisco Facchinei (University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy)

MSC codes: 90-XX

Description: The session will present recent state-of-the-art results on several topics within the area of Continuous Optimization, both from a theoretical and a computational perspective, including related subjects, like variational inequalities, convex feasibility problems, equilibrium problems, stochastic optimization, etc. We will discuss algorithms focused on applications to machine, learning, data mining, clustering and other issues currently enjoying very high visibility. The list of speakers (see below) was put together giving special attention to gender equilibrium, subject diversity, a careful balance between veteran and young reserarchers, and also geographical distribution: in the case of Brazil, we have speakers from the Southern region, the Central-Southeast region and the North-Northeast region, going far beyond the traditional concentration on the Rio de Janeiro-São Paulo axis. We mention finally that all speakers have made substantial contributions to research in their specific subjects, having attained a considerable degree of recognition within the optimization communities of their respective countries.

  • Roger Behling, University of Santa Catarina (Brazil)
  • Evelin Krulikovski, University of Parana (Brazil)
  • Matteo Lapucci University of Florence (Italy)
